Sericin – A Unique Biomaterial
نویسندگان
چکیده
Silk is made up of two types of proteinssilk fibroin and sericin. Silk sericin is the main residue (≈2030%) in raw silk fiber. It is composed of 18 amino acids. Solubility, molecular weight, and gelling properties of sericin depends on the methods of isolation i.e. degumming. Sericin has proved itself as a highly potential biomaterial by wide variety of applications in medicine, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biosorbent and other areas. Sericin has a good capacity for use in biomedical and pharmaceutical areas. Sericin coated fabric showed a high degree of bacteriacidal activity. Sericin might be a valuable ingredient for development of antimicrobial textiles. Various groups are still working to explore some untouched areas of application of sericin.

Preparation of elastic silk sericin hydrogel.
This paper reports a preparation method for silk sericin hydrogel using the Sericin-hope silkworm, whose cocoons consist almost exclusively of sericin. Sericin solution, prepared from Sericin-hope cocoons, contains intact sericin and forms elastic hydrogels with the addition of ethanol. The sericin hydrogel can be prepared without crosslinking by chemicals or irradiation and might be usable as ...

The domesticated silkworm, Bombyx mori Linn., a lepidopteran molecular model and an important economic insect that are emerging as an ideal molecular genetic resource for solving a broad range of biological problems. The silkworm, B. mori produces massive amount of silk proteins during the final stage of larval development. These proteins are stored in the middle silk gland and they are dischar...
متن کاملBiomimetic Nucleation of Hydroxyapatite Crystals Mediated by Antheraea pernyi Silk Sericin Promotes Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Biomacromolecules have been used as templates to grow hydroxyapatite crystals (HAps) by biomineralization to fabricate mineralized materials for potential application in bone tissue engineering. Silk sericin is a protein with features desirable as a biomaterial, such as increased hydrophilicity and biodegradation. Mineralization of the silk sericin from Antheraea pernyi (A. pernyi) silkworm has...
متن کاملEvaluation of silk sericin as a biomaterial: in vitro growth of human corneal limbal epithelial cells on Bombyx mori sericin membranes
Sericin and fibroin are the two major proteins in the silk fibre produced by the domesticated silkworm, Bombyx mori. Fibroin has been extensively investigated as a biomaterial. We have previously shown that fibroin can function successfully as a substratum for growing cells of the eye. Sericin has been so far neglected as a biomaterial because of suspected allergenic activity. However, this mis...
متن کاملPURIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF GLUE LIKE SERICIN PROTEIN FROM A WILD SILKWORM Antheraea assamensis Helfer
Sericin is a hot water soluble glycoprotein and has been partially characterized in the domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori. Contrary to this very little information is available about the sericin of non mulberry silkworms. Sericin is generally a waste product during degumming. Recent advancement in silkworm research has revealed the use of sericin of B. mori as protein based biomaterial involvin...
